Update - Glen Franka Reservoir
Following a recent statutory 10-year inspection of Glenfranka Reservoir by an independent Panel Engineer, a requirement has been issued to comply with Measures in the Interest of Safety (MIOS) under the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act.
In line with the requirements mandated under the Reservoirs (Scotland) Act as outlined in the inspection report, a controlled reduction in the reservoir water level has now been completed. The drawdown has been carefully managed and monitored in partnership with specialist reservoir consultants, with detailed recording and photography of the reduction in Top Water Level throughout the operation.
Public safety and the long-term future of the reservoir remain the highest priorities. The Panel Engineer has indicated that the remaining body of water complies with the short-term safety requirements of the 10-year inspection. While the water level is now significantly reduced, we have been reassured that it is sufficient to maintain the current stock of fish within the reservoir, and the gradual drawdown has also prevented the removal of sediment downstream.
Discussions are continuing with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Historic Environment Scotland (HES) to identify a mutually agreeable long-term solution for the future management of the dam and the resolution of further Measures in the Interest of Safety identified during the inspection.
At present, it is anticipated that the current reduced water level will need to be maintained for approximately the next two years while options are assessed, approvals are sought, and a sustainable resolution is developed. We will keep the public updated on timelines and key milestones via our website and community engagement activities.
Because of the recent drawdown the shoreline is soft and it is advised that members of the public do not walk on the area until the land has hardened. Warning signage will be erected.Visually, it will improve once the shoreline vegetates.
We appreciate that the lowered water level represents a noticeable change for the local community and visitors to Glenfranka Reservoir. We would like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience while this important safety work progresses. Further updates will be shared as discussions and planning continue.
